Artist Spotlight: Sharon Hosley

September 11, 2015

Sharon Hosley is a potter with a knack for vibrant color combinations on her unique terracotta pieces. She has a variety of different pieces including bowls, mugs, and vessels. Many of her vessels and mugs include hand-sculpted animals including poodles, lions, cats, rabbits, and bears. Each animal has its own personality as it literally pops off the pieces.

Sharon began studying ceramics at Guilford Art Center where she learned the art of wheel throwing. After learning to work with porcelain to create functional vessels, Sharon began to experiment with form, design, and color. This led to her one-of-a-kind animal sculptures affixed onto various types of pieces.

Sharon "enjoys sculpting and incorporating personality in each individual animal. When working on an animal's face, I focus on giving each one an expression of peace and vitality," as she states on her website.

Each terracotta piece includes a beautiful craft of form as well as surface designs and detailing inspired by the Southwest and Mexico. Her vibrant colors are achieved through multiple layers.

Exquisite form and functionality make Sharon's work both beautiful and useful. Most of her pieces, excluding those with sculpted animals, are dishwasher safe for easy care.

Sharon accepts custom commissions for her vessels including jars with sculpted animals, a popular choice for storing the remains of beloved pets. She also has a variety of other pieces available including spoon rests, pots and jars of all kinds, and custom sets such as for chips and dip.
